Research Questions
  • How much of a significance does Dyslexia play in the movie?

  • How are the Dyslexic characters portrayed in the movie? How does it correspond to reality?

  • Has the inclusion of Dyslexia affected viewer reception? If so, How?


 Research Question 1: Will be answered using Syd FIeld's Narrative Structure to examine whether the condition of Dyslexia is consistenyly featured in the story plot and track its portrayal.

 

Research Question 2: WIll be answered by using the broken down story plot elements (Syd FIeld's Narrative Structure) and then referencing them to reality, eventually serving to prove the Baudry Appararus Theory right/wrong that an ideological cinema exists.

 

Research Question 3: Will be answered after RQ 1 and 2 are done, and draw a conclusion based on the results of the two questions to conclude whether Dyslexia in the film did give any perspective of the condition to viewers and whether it was used as a tool of attraction to the viewers.

 

About the project

 

Introduction

 

Scope of Project

I will be focusing on the portrayal of Dyslexia only,so it will not be analysing films which portray mental conditions related, but not similar to Dyslexia.

 

Research will be based on the two films, which provide a fictional story plot portraying Dyslexia with an entertainment purpose,but not documentaries which are meant to inform and teach people.

 

This paper will only be using a few keynote or significant scenes in each films, and will not be analysing the whole three films due to time word restriction of this project.

 

Objective

 

Lucy.W(2012) noted that "where the media holds a high level of influence over the perceptions of the general public, an under-representation or mis-representation of disabled people has large social implications."

 

This shows how the portrayal of disabilities could potentially serve to raise awareness or increase ignorance about the specific disability, hence this paper will be studying the social impacts the 2 films will have regarding their portrayal of Dyslexia.

 

This research references portrayal of Dyslexics to reality and finds out the extent of accuracy to which Dyslexia is portrayed across these 2 films,Taare Zameen Par(2007) and Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief(2010).

 

Through this project, we could get a better understanding of how Dyslexia and possibly yother disabilities could be potrayed inaccurately for the sake of entertainment and find out about the possible misconceptions it could cause to the audience. 

Methodology

 

Syd Field's Narrative structure will be used to break down each movie's story plot into 3 portions for more systematic analyis. 

 

Jean-Loius Baudry's Apparatus theory will then be used when comparing the portrayal of Dyslexia to reality in the films, and through the course of trying to prove the theory right/wrong we would find out how accurate each movie's portrayal is.

 

Films that this project will be using: Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief(2010) and Taare Zameen Par (2008).
