Reflections

Through these few months......

This was my first time doing a project in category 2. With this also being the first time I am working as a solo group, it did pose certain challenges to me.

The first one was managing and dsitribution of work. I feel that as a solo member, all of the work has to be done by myself as compared to a group spiltting up the work, so it did count as a challenge because with more stuff to do, I sometimes have to neglect other things like rest etc. Working alone did allow me to choose when I want to work on because there is no need to coordinate with other members. However, the work being done by oneself does take its toll on my time schedule, because with more work means more time spent. In addition, being in secondary 3, I had to take on challenges of new subjects, more academic commitments as well as CCA positions, it was quite hard to find time to work on this project regularly, and I remember times where I had to do "last minute work".

As time went on, I developed better time management skills, and I understood the importance of sacrificing some stuff like outings with friends. Overall, I became more consistent in doing research, writing my HRP and basically put more time into this project.

The second problem was with the project itself. I had not done a category 2 project before, so I was unfamiliar at first to some of the expectations required, and I feel that especially at the Prelim rounds, I did not quite meet the standards of the judges. This was because of how during the Q and A I received a lot of feedback about this project not being feasible (my original idea was to analyze whether Dyslexia could be considered a gift or not) and suggesting to me to change my idea.

It was abit demoralising at first because it felt as if the work I did was pointless, and I did not understand their comments at first.

It took me a while when I started to review my work, make changes and eventually chose a slightly more different approach. Looking back, it was a wise choice because if I had continued to use my old idea, I would have failed the Semi finals round easily. This experience taught me to be more receptive to feedback, and to step out and look at the big picture when doing projects.

In general, this project has taught me about responsibility, time management, as well as the importance of preparation in doing anything. I am grateful to my mentor and everyone who has given me some form of help or guidance along this project. It has been very meaningful in that I found out the ways in which Dyslexia as a disability can be portrayed to a certain extent of inaccuracy for entertainment, and this project has enabled me to view movies about disabilities as well as disabled people in a different light.
